India’s Deputy Minister for External Affairs, Sevala Naik Mude, toured the newly expanded Jeety Rubber LLC operations, Sala Rubber Corporation (SRC) in Weala, Margibi County on Wednesday, December 19, 2024.

The visit, which showcased the US$44 million rubber processing facility owned by Indian business tycoon Upjit Singh Sachdeva (known as Jeety), which recently acquired the Salala Rubber Corporation (SRC) in September 2024.

The combined operation now employs over 1,900 Liberians, following Jeety’s successful bid for SRC’s 4,400-hectare natural rubber plantation, beating out competitors including Firestone Liberia and a former Socfinaf Group shareholder.

The acquisition has helped Jeety Rubber LLC address its previous challenges in securing sufficient latex cup lumps for full operational capacity.

During the tour of the sprawling plantation and processing facilities, Deputy Minister Mude, who also serves as Additional Secretary for Central and West Africa, observed various stages of rubber production, from cultivation and harvesting to latex extraction, processing, and packaging.

“Your investment here is not just about business; it is about creating jobs, empowering local communities, and contributing to the overall growth of Liberia,” Mude remarked during the visit.

He emphasized the importance of foreign direct investment in developing countries and urged business leaders to adopt environmentally friendly practices.

Jeety affirmed his commitment to sustainable operations, stating, “We are dedicated to ensuring that our operations are environmentally friendly. We believe that responsible business practices are essential for the long-term success of our investments and the well-being of the communities we serve and work.”

The company has implemented several corporate social responsibility programs, including: Educational scholarships for local children, Healthcare initiatives, School construction and Infrastructure development in SRC camps.

The acquisition of SRC, Liberia’s fourth-largest rubber-producing company, came after a period of challenges for the operation. Prior to the sale, SRC had faced accusations from workers, Green Advocates, and international rights groups regarding: Poor working conditions, Land grabbing, Environmental degradation and Human rights abuses.

The company had shut down operations approximately two months before the acquisition, laying off its entire workforce of about 900 workers following violent protests. These workers received end-of-service benefits by Liberian law before Jeety’s takeover.

“Today’s visit has reinforced my belief that together, we can achieve great things. The partnership between India and Liberia is not just about trade; it is about building a shared future for both nations,” Jeety concluded during the tour.

The combined operation now stands as a significant player in Liberia’s rubber industry, producing semi-processed rubber products, including TSR 10, for both local and international markets.
