UPP Political Leader cheers 2023 Farmington River Declaration
…As He pens Document
The Political Leader of the United People’s Party (UPP) has expressed excitement over the signing of a peace pact, the 2023 Farmington River Declaration by twenty-six(26) political parties.
The declaration, which is in line with a previous agreement signed during the 2017 Presidential and Legislative Elections, aims to prevent violence that tends to undermine the conduct of the ensuing October 10 Presidential and Legislative Elections. It is geared to ensuring a violent-free electoral process, with political actors being cognizant of the need to maintain a peaceful environment before, during, and after the 2023 Elections.
The signing of the electoral peace pact comes on the heel of continuing violence at some Biometric Voter Registration centers across Liberia, particular in Montserrado County and most definitely in Electoral District #10 between rival groups loyal to Representative Yekeh Kolubah, and the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC).
Accordingly, in a brief interview with reporters following the signing ceremony at the Farmington Hotel in Margibi County, Dr. Darlington Monynson Tarr, indicated that the document is in the right direction for maintaining peace before, during and after the much-publicized electoral process.
Dr. Tarr pointed out that the “2023 Farmington River Declaration ” is a crucial first step ahead of the impending elections in maintaining peace and security and enhancing national unity and reconciliation.
He asserted that Liberia deserves nothing but a tranquil society full of political tolerance and respect for every actor, regardless of political, tribal and religious differences.
Taking an analytical look of the country’ current political climate, which according to him is blurred with conflict, Dr. Tarr noted that the document is an urgent intervention before the 2023 Presidential and Legislative Elections are conducted.
“If the rising political tensions are left unattended, this could break beyond measure and produce unimaginable consequences and this is what I think the document aims to address,” added the UPP Political Leader.
