Liberia’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Francis KATEH, on Thursday announced that more than 40 persons are reported dead following the explosion of the gas in Totota, Bong County, Central Liberia on Tuesday.

A gasoline tanker carrying about 2000 gallons of gas on Tuesday December 26, 2023, dropped in a gutter at the center of the town of TOTOTA.

This situation created a rush of tens of people, women, men and even children towards the accidental fallen tanker. The crowd began to hunt for the gasoline the truck was carrying.

“People started going to go to their houses for container, buckets, any recipient they could lay their hands on to get gasoline out of the truck.” Emmanuel TUCKER, an inhabitant of TOTOTA told Daily Watch News.

As the tens of people, women and children included, were on the hunt to extract petroleum product from the tanker, it exploded. At least 15 persons died instantly.

According to Dr. KATEH, the death toll may increase following the completion of the ongoing door-to door contact tracing that has been launched by the ministry of health.
