The Liberian Senate witnessed a historic moment as Nya D Twayen Jr. was officially inducted as the newest Senator of Nimba County, following his certification by the National Elections Commission (NEC) as the winner of the April 22, 2024 by-election.

The induction ceremony, presided over by Senate Pro Tempore Sen. Nyonblee Kangar Lawrence, marked the beginning of Senator Twayen’s tenure in the esteemed legislative body.

Senator Twayen’s election to the Senate was prompted by the vacancy created by the elevation of His Excellency Jeremiah K. Koung to the Vice Presidency of the Republic of Liberia. Having served as Senator for three years, Vice President Koung’s departure necessitated a by-election, leading to Senator Twayen’s victory and subsequent induction into office.

In accordance with the standing rules and procedures of the Liberian Senate, Senator Twayen presented his Certificate of Election and was administered the oath of office by the Secretary of the Senate, J. Nanborlor F. Singbeh, Sr. He was then escorted to his official seat by Senators Edwin M. Snowe, Jr., Prince Moye, and Gbenzongar M. Findley, following instructions from Pro Tempore Lawrence.

In his inaugural address, Senator Twayen expressed gratitude to the people of Nimba County for their confidence in him as their new leader. He outlined his first objective as fostering unity and promoting improvements in the livelihoods of Nimba’s citizens.

Senator Twayen called on citizens and national leaders to prioritize the collective interests of Nimba and its people over political considerations.

Senate Pro Tempore Nyonblee Kangar Lawrence congratulated Senator Twayen on his election and induction, encouraging him to collaborate with the Senate in serving the constituents of Nimba County and the Liberian people.

Senator Twayen’s tenure will complete the unexpired term of former Senator Jeremiah K. Koung, now Vice President of Liberia, signaling a new chapter in Nimba County’s representation in the Senate.
