LIBERIA: Ex-CBL Deputy Governor Charles Sirleaf Is Dead

Mr. Charles Sirleaf, the oldest son of former President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) has been confirmed dead.

Mr. Sirleaf died while asleep in the West African nation of Ghana on late Sunday evening with his death sending shock waves across the country and the international world.

The former CBL official, an acclaimed financial expert, leaves to mourn a host of family members/relatives including his mother, former President Johnson-Sirleaf, his wife, Madam Fanta Donzo Sirleaf among others.

Since his death, several individuals, institutions and countries including the United States of America (USA), have expressed sorrow over the “untimely” incident.

The US in a statement states: “On behalf of the American people, we would like to express our condolences to the family of former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on the passing of her son.”

Mr. Abel, a former official in the President Sirleaf’s government wrote on his Facebook page to eulogize the late Charles Sirleaf.

“My esteemed former boss and former President of the Republic of Liberia, H.E. Mrs. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. We are so deeply sorry for the death of your son, Mr. Charles Sirleaf, who served our country in different capacities with diligence, honor and commitment. Our hearts are saddened by your loss, and our prayers and thoughts are with you. We write to extend our deepest condolences to you and the family. Let God be the source of your strength in these difficult periods of bereavement. It’s well!”

Also, Mr. Charles Yates, a former journalist and social media influencer, wrote: “
Former Deputy Central Bank Governor for operations Charles Sirleaf is reported dead. According to family sources Mr. Sirleaf died last night in Ghana. The late Sirleaf is the second son of former Liberian president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. He served the CBL for several years. RIP… My condolences to the Sirleaf family.”

Freedom Radio, a major opposition-run media outlet sent out its sympathy to the bereaved family.

“We regret to share the news of the passing of Charles Sirleaf, the esteemed son of former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. At the age of 68, Mr. Sirleaf, who notably held the role of acting governor of the Central Bank of Liberia, peacefully departed in his sleep in Ghana. The confirmation of his passing by a family source on Monday has left many in a state of shock and sorrow.
Recognized as a prominent figure within Liberia’s financial landscape, Mr. Sirleaf’s legacy was marked by his dedicated service as the Deputy Governor and Acting Executive Governor across multiple administrations from 2004 to 2020. His contributions to stabilizing the nation’s economy and instituting crucial financial reforms were commendable.

While the circumstances surrounding his passing remain undisclosed, the family has rightfully appealed for privacy during this difficult period.

Some social media platforms including Providence TV and LAMBE Online TV among others have also sympathized with the bereaved family and Liberia.

“As the nation grapples with this profound loss, the management and staff of LAMBE Online TV extend their deepest condolences to Charles Sirleaf’s beloved wife, Fanta Donzo Sirleaf, and his esteemed mother, former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Sirleaf family during this difficult time.”
