Liberia: Costa descends On Boakai

With three months away from the much publicized Presidential and Legislative Elections, the presidential bid of former Vice President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has been dealt a major blow.

This comes in the wake of the All Liberian Party (ALP) decision to withdraw its support from the former ruling Unity Party (UP) and its standard bearer’s presidential bid. The ALP, also a former member of the four-party collaboration, the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP), has been one of the key allies of the former vice president’s presidential bid since they all left the arrangement.

Ever since the pronouncement of Nimba County Senator Jeremiah Kpang Koung as running mate by Mr. Boakai, the ALP has disengaged as it was rumored that Henry P. Costa, an executive of the ALP, was let down having been one of the favorites for the slot.

As he descended on the UP’s political leader at a news conference held at the ALP Headquarters on the Old Road, outside Monrovia, Mr. Costa stated that the party took the decision because the party was abandoned by Amb. Boakai who then chose and preferred a new political alliance in Nimba County Senators Prince Yormie Johnson and Jeremiah Koung and others.

According to Mr. Costa, the decision by the former Vice President means he has in totality abandoned their once shared vision for the country.

“My fellow Liberians, the press, let me tell you all the truth, we did not abandon Amb. Joseph Nyuma Boakai as they would have you believe, but rather it was Amb. Joseph Nyuma Boakai who abandoned us. Even worse, he has also abandoned his own vision for the Liberian people,” he asserted.

“My fellow Liberians, I have been designated by our party to announce and inform in categorical and unambiguous terms that our party, the All Liberian Party (ALP) is no longer ally or partner with Amb. Joseph Nyuma Boakai and his Unity Party. We no longer share the same ideals, vision, or values. In the coming days, our party will be meeting to determine our next course of action,” he stated.

Costa, a provocative talk show host, maintained that the since the announcement of running mate by Amb. Boakai, and during this period of the ALP’s silence and consultation, the UP has been antagonizing the ALP in ways despite after all of the party’s sacrifices and support given the UP.

“Firstly, UP executives have been engaging some ALP aspirants to abandon ALP and run on the UP ticket across many districts. They have engaged ALP executives to resign from ALP and join UP. All of which evil efforts have failed. We have sent several words of caution asking them to desist, but have all fallen on deaf ears. They have also moved to field candidates in many areas against ALP candidates, something which we both previously agreed they would not do. Moreover, you all recently witnessed how Ms. Telia Urey was unceremoniously removed from the JNB Tact Team, an organization that she led with distinction and passion, sacrificing her time, energy, and resources to make it what it is today,” Costa, among other things, added.

However, in response, former VP Boakai extended olive branch to the ALP stalwart, stating that he forgives him (Costa).

“Henry p costa is my son and I hold nothing against him. I forgive him and I am always willing to work with every well-meaning Liberian to accomplish our mission to rescue Liberia. I would advise all to focus our attention on the mission to remove the nightmare we have presiding over our country,” he stated.

“Let’s Think Liberia, Love Liberia and Build Liberia,” he added.
