In Furtherance of MOU With the GAC Experts from the Swedish National Audit Office concludes assessment visit to Liberia
A Technical Team comprising subject-matter experts from the Swedish National Audit Office or SNAO has concluded an assessment visit to Liberia in furtherance of the Memorandum of Understanding signed with the GAC in July,2022.
The experts were in the country from November 15 – 23, 2022 on a fact-finding mission in furtherance of a letter of Intent signed in the Gambian Capital, Banjul on May 10 this year by Liberia’s Auditor General, Hon. P. Garswa Jackson, Sr. and his Swedish Counterpart – Madam Helena Lindberg during a Governing Board Meeting of English-speaking African Organizations of Supreme Audit Institutions – AFROSAI-E. The Letter of Intent was signed for the establishment of institutional cooperation and key capacity-building projects.
The visiting SNAO technical team of subject-matter experts met and extensively discussed with Auditor General Jackson and members of the GAC Senior Management Team. Further discussions continued with Managers and heads of units and sections to identify areas of capacity building and collaborations.
The team also met with the Joint Public Accounts, Expenditure, Budget and Audit Committee of the Legislature.
Among key areas of cooperation and capacity-building are Quality Assurance and Quality Control, Financial Statements and Information Technology (IT) Audits, Follow-up on the Implementation of Audit Recommendations, Communications etc., etc.
The just-ended visit by the SNAO subject-matter experts is expected to be followed by cooperation documents to be signed by both Supreme Audit Institutions.
Meanwhile, a high level GAC delegation headed by Auditor General Hon. P. Garswa Jackson, Sr. is expected to visit Sweden next year to further this SNAO visit in strengthening the relationship and collaboration.
The Swedish Notional Audit Office has a longstanding relationship with the General Auditing Commission. In 2008, the SNAO signed a Memorandum of Understanding with former Auditor General John Morlu which led to technical capacity building assistance, as well as the establishment of the Performance Audit Unit at the GAC, among others.
